Is your canine buddy going grey around the muzzle? Your dog’s golden years are a special time. As your furry friend ages, he may not be as playful as he once was, but he’s still the same loving pet as always. Senior pets definitely have their own charms, and they really are super cute! We know you want to do everything possible to keep your old buddy healthy and comfortable. You’ll find some great life hacks for senior dog care in this article!
Homemade Pill Pouch
Do you have a hard time giving your canine buddy pills? You may find it easier with these homemade pill pouches. Mix 1 tablespoon of milk, 1 tablespoon of crunchy PB, and 2 tablespoons of flour. Mix and shape into little pockets, and keep them in the fridge or freezer. Fido may start looking forward to getting his medications!
Defeat Potty Problems
Just like people, dogs sometimes become incontinent as they age. If your canine buddy is having accidents, don’t punish the old fellow. Fido’s probably already embarrassed, and may become depressed if you scold him. Just clean the carpet using baking soda. Pour some onto the stain, let it sit for a while, and then vacuum it up. Bonus hack: if your dog has diarrhea, adding canned pureed pumpkin to his food may help firm things up.
Chicken Broth
If your pooch is dehydrated, sick, or just isn’t drinking enough water, add low-sodium chicken broth to his water dish to make it more tempting. Check the ingredients on the label for MSG, as sodium is often listed this way.
Soften Food
If old Fido’s teeth have become sensitive, softening his kibble will make eating easier for him. Add a little water or chicken broth to his food, and microwave it for 20-30 seconds.
Ease Arthritis Pain
Arthritis is very common in older dogs, and can make poor Fido very stiff and sore. To help soothe his aching bones, put some rice into a sock and tie the end off. Put it into the microwave for one minute, and then gently place it on your pup’s sore spots. Two daily 15-minute sessions will help ease Fido’s pain.
