Are you going to be traveling over the next few weeks? If so, you’re certainly in good company. This is the busiest travel times of the year! It’s becoming more and more common for people to take their dogs on trips with them. Read on as a Pickerington, OH vet discusses traveling with your canine buddy.
Do Plenty Of Research
The last thing you want is to find out that there’s an issue with your dog’s accommodations or travel arrangements. Do plenty of research before leaving. If you are staying at hotels, confirm pet policies and fee schedules. We also recommend making a list of pet-friendly hotels along your route, just in case you stop in a different area than you planned.
Be Prepared
Make sure that your furry pal is up to date on all of his vaccinations and parasite control products. Keep copies of your pet’s paperwork with you. (Tip: snap photos of the documents and email them to yourself.) Fido should also be microchipped and wearing proper ID tags.
Pack Well
Your pup will need food, treats, toys, bedding, dishes, a brush, a first aid kit, waste baggies, towels, and a spare leash and collar. If Fido takes supplements or medication, bring along several days’ extra, just in case. Going to a cold climate? Pack a doggy jacket and some paw balm as well.
Crate
Dogs should always travel in crates. It’s much safer for both of you! Add bedding and toys to make the crate comfier for your canine friend.
Itinerary
Schedule your journey so your pooch can stretch his legs every few hours. If you’re flying, choose a direct flight for short distances. If you’re leaving the continent, you may want to book with extra layover time, so you can get Fido before the next flight.
Flying
Every airline is different, so you’ll need to check rules and regulations. Keep in mind that flying in cargo can be very stressful and scary for dogs. It can also be dangerous. You may want to consider boarding your furry friend instead.
Arrival
When you get to your destination, take your canine pal for a long walk. This is a great way for both of you to check out your surroundings. Dogs can make great travel buddies!
