Offer Suitable Chews
One reason that puppies bite is to help them deal with teething pain. You’ll want to be sure that your furry friend always has plenty of suitable chew toys. Only use durable chew toys that will hold up to the constant biting. Kong toys are excellent for this.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Never punish or yell at Fido for misbehaving. This might just make him scared of you! Say ‘No’ in a firm tone if your puppy does something wrong. Then ignore him for a while. A little time out might help little Fido relax.
Puppyproofing
Puppyproofing is more about safety than petetiquette. Your puppy often uses his senses to explore his surroundings, and he might try to learn more about something by eating it. To prevent this from happening, take out or secure anything that can be dangerous, including medicines, plastic bags and ties, toxic plants, chemicals, and any small or sharp objects. Also, keep clothes in hampers, drawers, or closets, and store personal items, such as purses and phones, away from Fido.
Be Consistent
One thing you must do is be consistent. Your puppy can’t tell the difference between similar objects. Never give Fido an old pair of sneakers, and then expect that he’ll leave your new ones alone. If you have to tell your puppy not to chew or bite something, use the same vocal commands every time.
Taste Deterrent
If your canine companion constantly tries to bite your hand, try using a taste deterrent. In some cases, if you yelp like a puppy would, you can help him understand his mistake.
