Making Your Pet Feel Loved

February 15, 2021
Love Your Pet Day is coming up February 20th. Pets really need lots of love and care to thrive. They’re always there to cheer you up at the end of a bad day, or just relax with you. While our animal companions deserve to feel cherished every day, we love seeing them get extra pampered. A Pickerington, OH vet offers a few suggestions on how to do that below.

Be Consistent

Consistency is very important when it comes to interacting with our animal companions. Don’t yell at Fido for getting on the couch one day, and then let him get away with it the next. This will just confuse him, and may make him feel uneasy!

Keep Habitats Clean

Many of our smaller patients, such as reptiles, birds, and pocket pets, live in tanks or cages. Make sure that your animal companion’s home is clean and comfy. (This is a great day to pick up some new decorations or furnishings for your little buddy.)

Use Positive Reinforcement

Our animal friends are very cute, but they can also be mischievous and playful. Don’t punish your pet for mishaps. Instead, figure out what’s causing the bad behavior, and address that. For instance, if Fido is chewing your shoes, make sure he’s got lots of suitable chew toys to gnaw on instead.

Research

Even if you’ve had pets all your life, there will always be something more to learn about their needs and behavior. Pick up a few pet care books, or just do some research online. You may be surprised at what you discover! It’s also worth your while to do some breed or species specific learning. After all, Chihuahuas don’t have the same needs as Saint Bernards.

Don’t Skip Veterinary Appointments

Your pet may seem healthy, but you really can’t know that for sure unless you’re keeping up with their veterinary appointments. It’s also important to know what signs of illness to look for. Take your animal companion to the doctor regularly.

Attention

Part of making pets feel loved is just paying attention to them. Talk to your animal friend, pet them, and play with them. Treats will also brighten up their day. You’ll be repaid for your kindness with friendship and unconditional love, both of which are pretty special in our book. As your Pickerington, OH veterinary clinic, we’re here to help!
