Great Resolutions for Pet Parents

January 1, 2021
Happy New Year! As we leave 2020 behind–and not a minute too soon–many people are making resolutions for the coming year. This is a great time to take a look at your pet’s care routine, and see if anything could use improvement! Here, a Pickerington, OH veterinarian lists some great resolutions for people with pets.

Provide Proper Veterinary Care

Healthy pets are happy pets. Keep up with your pet’s veterinary care! At home, watch for signs that something is wrong. Pets can’t tell us if something is wrong, but they do let us know. The exact warning signs will vary from animal to animal, so ask your vet for more information. However, things like a lack of appetite, lethargy, fever, withdrawal, and unusual vocalization or behavior are generally signs for alarm. Call your vet right away if you notice anything wrong.

Make Life Fun!

Almost all of our animal companions—with the possible exceptions of some reptiles—enjoy and benefit from having playthings. Others, such as snakes, may not be very interested in play, but do benefit from the stimulation they get from going outside, or at least getting some (supervised) time out of their habitats. Make sure that your pet is getting the enrichment and stimulation they need.

Offer A Safe Environment

Some of our patients are very, very good at getting themselves into mischief. Don’t take safety for granted! Pay attention to potential hazards, such as toxic substances, like chemicals and medicine; strangling hazards, like ropes and cords; small or sharp items; and other dangers. Ask your vet for more information.

Consider A Habitat Upgrade

Whether you have a dog, cat, bunny, or horse, there’s likely something you can do to make them more comfortable. Get some pet-safe plants for Fluffy, or get Fido a doghouse. If you have a reptile, exotic pet, or pocket pet, aim to get them a bigger, better habitat.

Make Them Feel Loved

Pets enrich our lives in many ways. They also offer us love, friendship, and companionship, and really make our houses into homes. Pay attention to your little (or not so little) animal friend! Talk to them, pet them, and offer treats and ear scritches. That beautiful bond people form with their pets is a truly special thing. Please reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your Pickerington, OH veterinary clinic, we’re here to help!
