September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month! Kitties are adorable little pets, and they deserve to be happy all the time. What does it take to keep that little motor going? A Pickerington, OH vet lists some ‘purrfect’ options below.
Stimulation
Make sure Fluffy is getting enough stimulation and enrichment. Cats become anxious and unhappy with nothing to do! Provide your kitty with lots of fun toys to pounce on, and play with her daily. As we all know, our feline pals are very curious. Give your furball cardboard boxes, paper bags, and newspaper tunnels to investigate, and set out some pet-safe plants for her to sniff and nibble on. (Tip: check the ASPCA site for suggestions.) A comfy window seat with a good view is also important.
Veterinary Care
Fluffy would probably rather take a nap than come visit us, but proper veterinary care is crucial to her health. We strongly recommend spaying or neutering your pet. This will not only help prevent unwanted litters, it will also curb many undesirable behaviors, such as spraying and attempting to escape. Your kitty should also be current on vaccinations, exams, and parasite control. Healthy cats are happy cats!
Clean Litterbox
Keep Fluffy’s litterbox clean. No one likes a dirty bathroom!
Good Food
Give Fluffy the best cat food you can afford. Get into the habit of reading labels. Meat, fish, or poultry should be listed first and more often than any other ingredients. You can also give your feline buddy the occasional treat. Some good options are canned tuna or chicken in water; plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken without the skin, bones, or fat; sodium-free broth; and/or a little deli meat.
Pet Furniture
Fluffy will somehow manage to fall asleep on your bed or sofa. However, she’ll really enjoy having some things that suit her needs: specifically, her needs to nap, climb things, and supervise her humans. Cat towers are great, as they serve several ‘purrposes.’ Pet tents and tunnels are also fine. Needless to say, your drowsy furball will also require lots of comfy beds.
Love
Keep your kitty purring going by paying lots of attention to her and making sure that she feels loved and safe. Talk to Fluffy, pet her, and let her snuggle up with you.
