Tips for Boarding Your Dog

July 15, 2019
Dogs are very loyal and faithful, and really want nothing more than to hang out with their human pals all day, every day. Unfortunately, your canine companion can’t go everywhere with you. If you’re going out of town, you may need to put your furry best friend in a kennel. Dogs may also need to briefly stay at a pet hotel when their owners are moving, having surgery, or giving birth, or during certain home renovations. Here, a Pickerington, OH vet discusses boarding your dog.

Pack Carefully

Check with the kennel before packing for Fido. Some kennels allow you to bring toys and bedding, while others prefer to use their own supplies. If you bring food, treats, and/or medication for your pooch, pack a few days’ extra, just in case.

Avoid Long Farewells

We know, it’s hard to leave that furry face behind. However, it’s best to avoid drawn out goodbyes. This will just make parting more difficult for both you and Fido!

Ask Questions

Every kennel is different, so you’ll want to get clarification on a few things. Schedules are one thing to consider. If your pup’s daily routine at the kennel will be very different that the one he follows at home, start making adjustments in advance. You’ll also want to ask about policies for contacting you: some places will only call you for emergencies, others reach out with even minor questions, and some allow you to choose. Be sure to read paperwork thoroughly. Also, make sure you are clear on drop off and pickup times.

Look Into Perks

Many boarding facilities offer special perks and/or combined services. For example, if Fido’s doggy hotel offers grooming, you may be able to book a beauty appointment for him. (Bonus: you’ll be able to cuddle with a clean dog when you get home!)

Offer Written Instructions

We know, Fido is an important part of the family. However, the kennel staff doesn’t really need to know that your dog is afraid of your fuzzy slippers, or that he lets the cat steal his bed. However, it is important to offer specific care instructions, and to let your pup’s caretaker know about any medical issues, allergies, or behavioral problems. Offer these instructions in writing, and make sure the information is clear and concise. Do you need to board your dog? Contact us, your Pickerington, OH vet clinic!
