Holidays With Cats

December 1, 2018
With the holidays approaching, many of us are busy cooking, decorating, shopping, and making plans. Your feline pal will no doubt supervise you closely as you make your preparations. Fluffy is an important part of the family, and will be right there with you as you celebrate this special time of year. Read on as a local Pickerington, OH vet discusses holidays with kitties.

Gifts

Your furry friend definitely deserves a special gift or two. A new bed will get that little motor going! Toys are also a great option for kitties. You can give your pet a classic toy, like a catnip mouse or crinkly ball. Or, try something new, like catnip bubbles. Your feline buddy will also appreciate some pieces of furniture, such as a cat tower, pet tent, or tipi. Window seats are also a good option. Last but not least, you can give your kitty a little pot of catnip or cat grass.

Hazards

This can be a dangerous time of year for a frisky little furball! Many seasonal plants, such as poinsettias, holly, lilies, and mistletoe, are toxic to kitties. Pine needles, both the real ones and the fake ones, are dangerous as well. Ribbons, tinsel strands, electric lights, ornament hooks, and fragile ornaments are also unsafe for kitties. Candles and potpourri burners are another hazard: pets and flames are a very dangerous mix. Keep these items well out of paws’ reach!

The Tree

We can’t really discuss holidays with cats without talking about Fluffy’s habit of demolishing Christmas trees. As far as your furball is concerned, the tree is a huge cat tower decorated with kitty toys. To catproof your tree, decorate the bottom part sparingly, and with sturdy, unbreakable ornaments. Keep the fancy, fragile stuff on the top part. You can use fishing line to secure the treetop to the wall or ceiling.

Cuddles

Spend some quality time with your furry friend. Let Fluffy snooze on your lap as you watch holiday movies, and spend a few minutes playing with her. Don’t forget to snap some really cute pictures of Fluffy napping under the tree or curled up in a gift box. A purring kitty is the perfect touch that makes your home extra cozy and inviting at this time of year! Happy Holidays! Please feel free to contact us, your Pickerington, OH vet clinic, anytime.
