July Fourth Pet Hazards

July 1, 2018
Is your pet ready for the Fourth of July? As most holidays do, America’s birthday presents a few pet hazards that you should be aware of. It’s important that you take simple steps to keep your companion safe! Learn more below from your vet in Pickerington, OH.

Fireworks

Pets and fireworks don’t mix. Tempting as it may be, don’t bring your dog to the local fireworks display—there’s just too great a chance of the deafening booms frightening your pooch into running off. Keep all pets safely secured at home, and ensure that they’re all properly identified with ID tags, microchips, or both. If you or your neighbors plan to set off smaller pyrotechnics at home, it’s always safest to keep pets indoors. Not only could firecrackers and sparklers startle pets into running away, they could burn your pet if they get too close!

Toxic Foods

There are many common picnic and party foods that you don’t want your pet ingesting. The list includes garlic, onions, grapes and raisins, chives, scallions, shallots, avocado, chocolate, candy, fatty foods, salty items like pretzels or potato chips, and many more. Keep your pet’s prying paws away from your picnic food. Will your July Fourth celebrations include alcoholic beverages? Remember that alcohol of all types can poison pets in very small amounts. Don’t leave adult beverages unattended, and keep a close eye on your pet to make sure they don’t sneak a sip.

Hot Weather

With the Fourth of July holiday comes hot, humid weather. It’s all too easy for pets to experience dangerous heatstroke or dehydration if left outdoors for too long! Remember to bring your pet back indoors, where it’s cool and air-conditioned, on a frequent basis. Indoors and out, make sure to provide a large bowl of cool, fresh water for your companion to drink from as they please.

Outdoor Pests

If your pet will be spending time outside this holiday, make sure they’re up to date on their pest control medications. Fleas, ticks, worms, and other parasites are just waiting to take a chunk out of your animal friend! If your pet isn’t already set up with the proper preventatives, give your vet’s office a call today to get your pet the care they need.
