Horse Care Hacks

October 15, 2017
If you’re involved in the horse world, we probably don’t have to tell you about how wonderful our equine friends are… or how much work they require. Keeping Silver happy and healthy definitely takes a lot of elbow grease. We’re here to help! Read on for some great horse care hacks from a Pickerington, OH vet.

Bit Of Help

You really can’t blame Silver for not wanting a cold bit in his mouth. Use a crockpot to warm bits up before riding. This is also a great way to prepare hot towels. Just remember to unplug it afterwards!

Diaper Trick

Keep some diapers on hand at the barn. These are great for applying poultices. (Tip: size 5 will fit most horses.)

Ketchup Bottle

A ketchup bottle is a great way to apply medications for thrush, and will really cut down on the goo and mess.

Shower Curtain

Here’s a simple way to keep your tack from getting dusty: hang a clear shower curtain over it, so that it protects your gear without hiding it.

Time Saver

Set out your feed buckets at night, and use shower caps to keep flies out. This will save you quite a bit of time in the morning!

Medicine Trick

If you have to give Silver some medicine he doesn’t care for, disguise it in organic carrot or apple baby food. You can also add a little honey. Another trick is to keep empty worming tubes and fill them with molasses. Giving your equine pal regular treats this way will cause him to magically become much more willing to accept his de-wormer.

De-Icing

Use a spaghetti spoon to clear ice from water buckets in winter. If you have a trough, a pool strainer will do the trick.

Bell Boots

Before putting Silver’s bell boots on, soak them in hot water. This will make them more pliable, and easier to manage.

Luggage Tags

Put luggage tags on the saddle you use to go trail riding. That way, if something happens and Silver runs off, he’ll be wearing your contact information.

Fishing Vest

Speaking of trail riding, a fishing vest is a great addition to your riding wardrobe. You can never have too many pockets when you’re out on the trail! Do you have questions or concerns about your horse’s health or care? Call us, your Pickerington, OH pet hospital, anytime!
